Lee Deacon's first NRCHA Open Snaffle Bit Futurity win was on a special gelding named Tornado Jonez, who was put in his program to become a non-pro horse. After bringing him along in training, Deacon soon realized that his talents were more far-reaching, and he set out to enter him in the open competition. Jonez, as he is more affectionately known, is a horse that will let a rider tell him what to do but his real force comes out when he is trusted to do it his way. Being the true horseman that he is, Deacon recognized this about his trusty steed, and he turned him loose at the Futurity, letting him take them to victory in both the Intermediate and Open Futurity Championships.
The Man From Down Under
Deacon grew up in Australia where he developed his love for the equine lifestyle at a very young age. His father was a bareback rider and horse breeder and at the age of 16, Deacon went to work on a cattle station to further his skills. After learning more about cattle and working for two of Australia's most renowned reining horse trainers, Deacon moved to the United States in 2012 to work for one of NRCHA's Million Dollar Riders and Platinum athlete, Chris Dawson. While working for Dawson, Deacon not only fell in love with the reined cow horse industry, but he also met his future wife, Ashley. Deacon married Ashley in 2014 and a year later, they opened the doors of Deacon Equine together and they have never looked back.
